a steady walk towards the New Jerusalem

About this blog

Throughout most of my life I’ve been the kind of person always looking over the horizon, always kind of impatiently waiting for the next thing to come. To a lesser extent I can still be that way today. Getting fixated on one project or another and focused almost single-mindedly on it until it’s completed, only to jump to another before I can enjoy being done with the last one. This natural tendency isn’t all bad, but it does need some moderation. Otherwise I’ll pass most of my life by without ever having taken the time to smell the proverbial roses. So when thinking about this blog’s title I wanted to go with the term journey. I need the reminder that life is a journey, not a series of fits and starts. I must be focused on the process, the nitty gritty daily things, immersed in the ride, not just waiting for it to be over. But that too is an outlook that needs moderation. The state of being on a journey, in which the focus is all on the journey, has a name. We call it being lost. Without a destination the journey is a meaningless wondering through the woods with no idea where we are or where we are going.

But praise the Lord that He has given us a clear destination, and one well worth fixating on! While on earth Jesus told His disciples that He was going to go and prepare a place for them. In the book of Revelation we are told this place is the New Jerusalem which will be placed on the New Earth, under a New Heavens. It’s a glorious place where we will reside with Jesus, be able to see Him face to face and talk with Him. It’s the place we were made to call home. And to me it encompasses all the warm feelings I think of when I envision what home means. Peace, contentment, belonging, family, abiding.

So there’s balance. I’m on a journey. That’s where I’m at now and I need to pay attention to the trip, not just ticking off the miles. But there’s also a destination, so the journey isn’t meaningless. There’s a purpose to this journey, boundaries to our behavior, a definite path we should trod, all brought into focus by our steady walk towards the New Jerusalem. Which I think most of us wish was more steady, without so many detours off on side trails that get us no place good.

If you are currently on a journey that has no known destination, if you don’t know Jesus as your Lord and Savior, then I suggest you check out http://www.plevnachurch.com. The first tab on that website is a great introduction to who Jesus is and how to come to know Him. Or just open up a copy of God’s word, The Bible, and get to know who Jesus is.

If you’re reading this blog then you’ve probably accessed it by first looking at my church’s website, http://www.plevnachurch.com. That being the case, I thought my first post should be about the website. When our church’s Board of Education first decided to make a church website I thought it would take a couple of months to put together. Well, that guess undershot by about a year. It’s been a VERY long project, but I’m very pleased with how it turned out. I’ve never been a part of building a website before, and I was truly amazed at how many hours you can spend just deciding on what color/texture/graphic to use as the background. In case you’re curious, yes, we built the website ourselves. We bought a nice little program to help us called Serif WebPlus X6. After using it for a year I’d happily recommend it to anybody. We also decided to both purchase our URL and Webhosting through a company called namecheap. Yeah, I know, not much of a name. But seriously, their service is outstanding and we’ve never regretted going with them for a minute. When I’ve had questions and e-mailed them they literally got back to me within minutes. When we started this project, nobody on the website committee having any previous experience with websites, we prayed heavily for God’s guidance and that He’d give us wisdom and skill as we proceeded. I don’t mean to brag, but I’d look at the finished project as a definite answer to prayer.
